Virtual mailbox for expats: think total cost, not sticker price

r/expats and digital-nomad threads keep comparing Traveling Mailbox, iPostal1, Anytime Mailbox, and US Global Mail. The useful question isn’t “which is cheapest per month?”—it’s “what will I pay in a normal month of scans plus one international forward?”

We do not invent dollar amounts here. Plan prices and shipping tables change; always check the provider’s current pricing page before you buy.

Cost stack (every provider)

  1. Base mailbox rental — monthly or annual; may include a scan allowance.
  2. Open & scan — per envelope after the included quota (or always metered).
  3. Storage — letters and especially packages beyond free days.
  4. Forwarding / shipping — postage + handling; international is where bills spike.
  5. Extras — notary for Form 1583, check deposit, consolidation, pickup.
Worked example (illustrative math only) Suppose base is $B/mo with N free scans, extra scans are $S each, and one consolidated international ship is $P + handling $H. A “quiet” month might be ≈ $B. A “passport + two Amazon forwards” month might be ≈ $B + (extra scans) + $P + $H. Replace letters with live numbers from the provider—don’t trust a blog’s outdated table (including ours if we later quote figures).

Snowbird / part-year note

If you’re in the US half the year, you still complete Form 1583 once. Look for pause options, local pickup, and whether you can keep the same PMB across seasons. Brand matters less than whether that location will still be open when you return.
