Virtual mailbox for expats: think total cost, not sticker price
r/expats and digital-nomad threads keep comparing Traveling Mailbox, iPostal1, Anytime Mailbox, and US Global Mail. The useful question isn’t “which is cheapest per month?”—it’s “what will I pay in a normal month of scans plus one international forward?”
We do not invent dollar amounts here. Plan prices and shipping tables change; always check the provider’s current pricing page before you buy.
Cost stack (every provider)
- Base mailbox rental — monthly or annual; may include a scan allowance.
- Open & scan — per envelope after the included quota (or always metered).
- Storage — letters and especially packages beyond free days.
- Forwarding / shipping — postage + handling; international is where bills spike.
- Extras — notary for Form 1583, check deposit, consolidation, pickup.
Expat checklist before you subscribe
- Can you complete Form 1583 from abroad (remote notary)?
- Do you need a specific state address (taxes, voting, licensing)—or just “any stable US street address”?
- Letters only, or regular packages?
- Will you forward weekly, monthly, or mostly view scans and shred?
- Is the location an independent operator? Read recent reviews for that store’s package room and support.
How the big three usually feel for expats
| Need | Often a fit | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|
| Predictable company-run experience | Traveling Mailbox | Fewer location choices than huge franchise maps. Confirm scan/ship pricing live. |
| Many cities / try a local operator | iPostal1 or Anytime Mailbox | Franchise variance: hours, ship speed, and “will they consolidate?” differ by center. |
| Heavy parcel forwarding | Compare operators + US Global Mail–style shippers | Ask about dim weight, customs forms, and prohibited items before the first big box. |

Packages & consolidation
- Letter-centric plans get expensive if you treat the mailbox like a US Amazon locker.
- Ask: free package receipt? Photo of label? Consolidation fee? Max dimensions?
- For snowbirds who only need seasonal holds, prioritize storage policies over ship rates.
Snowbird / part-year note
If you’re in the US half the year, you still complete Form 1583 once. Look for pause options, local pickup, and whether you can keep the same PMB across seasons. Brand matters less than whether that location will still be open when you return.
